GETTING AROUND BY TRAIN FOR YOUR WEDDING IN ITALY
If you’re planning a wedding in Italy, one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways for you and your guests to travel around the country is by train. Italy’s rail network is extensive, affordable, scenic and surprisingly easy to use once you know a few tips. From Milan to Florence, Rome to Venice, or even smaller lakeside towns and villages, trains are often far easier than hiring cars and dealing with parking, ZTL zones and Italian traffic!
For destination weddings especially, trains can make life much simpler for guests arriving from abroad. Many guests love the experience too. Sitting back with a coffee while passing vineyards, lakes and historic cities is all part of the Italian adventure.

WHY WE RECOMMEND TRAINS FOR WEDDING GUESTS
For many weddings in Italy, guests fly into different airports and arrive on different days. Trains give everyone flexibility and allow guests to travel independently without needing transfers everywhere.
High speed trains in Italy are excellent and connect most major cities quickly:
-
Milan to Florence: around 2 hours
-
Milan to Venice: around 2 hours 30 mins
-
Rome to Florence: around 1 hour 30 mins
-
Rome to Naples: around 1 hour
-
Milan to Rome: under 3 hours
The main train company in Italy is Trenitalia and this is usually the easiest website for international guests to use in English.
Another useful journey planner for train times is ViaggiaTreno Journey Planner which is great for checking live train schedules and delays.
WHICH TRAINS SHOULD YOU BOOK?
Italy has several different train types:
Frecciarossa
These are the fast, modern high speed trains connecting the major cities. They are comfortable, air conditioned and ideal for wedding guests travelling long distances quickly.
Intercity
A slightly slower but often cheaper option connecting many towns and cities across Italy.
Regional Trains
These smaller trains connect local towns and villages. If your wedding venue is in a countryside or lake area, guests may need a regional train for the final part of the journey.
BUYING TRAIN TICKETS IN ITALY
For most visitors, the easiest option is simply to buy tickets online in advance using:
Booking ahead can save a lot of money on high speed routes.
For regional trains, prices are usually fixed, so there is less advantage to booking early.
IMPORTANT: REMEMBER TO VALIDATE PAPER TICKETS
This is one of the most common mistakes tourists make in Italy!
If you buy a paper ticket for a regional train at the station, you usually need to validate (stamp) it before boarding. There are small machines in the station, often green or yellow, where you insert the ticket to date stamp it. If you forget, you could receive a fine onboard.
Digital tickets bought online are generally automatically validated.
METRO TICKETS IN ITALY
In cities like Milan, Rome and Naples, guests may also use the Metro system.
Metro tickets can usually be purchased:
-
At ticket machines inside stations
-
At tabacchi shops (small convenience/tobacco stores)
-
Through contactless card payment at some gates
-
Via transport apps in larger cities
Most metro systems require you to validate the ticket by tapping or inserting it at the barriers before entering.
A useful tip for guests: always keep the ticket until the end of the journey as inspectors do random checks.
ITALIAN AIRPORTS WITH TRAIN STATIONS INSIDE OR CONNECTED DIRECTLY
One of the best things about travelling in Italy is that many airports are directly connected to the rail network.
Some of the easiest airports for train travel are:
Rome Fiumicino Airport
The train station is directly inside the airport terminal and connected by the famous Leonardo Express train to Rome Termini station in around 32 minutes.
Milan Malpensa Airport
Connected by the Malpensa Express train to Milan city centre.
Venice Marco Polo Airport
Connected via bus and train combinations including Venezia Airlink.
Pisa Airport
Has direct rail connections making it very easy for Tuscany weddings.
Palermo Airport
Direct train services into Palermo city centre.
Florence Airport
No train station directly inside, but easy tram connections into Florence Santa Maria Novella station.
