YOUR GUESTS’ GUIDE TO ATTENDING A WEDDING IN ITALY
Everything you need to know before you travel
Being invited to a wedding in Italy is something truly special. It’s not just a wedding day… it’s usually a full experience, often spread across a few days, in one of the most beautiful settings in the world.
If you’re travelling from abroad, a little preparation goes a long way. This guide will help you feel relaxed, organised and ready to enjoy every moment.

GETTING THERE
Italy is very well connected, but your final destination may require a little extra travel after landing.
Most weddings will be within reach of:
Milan (for Lake Como and northern Italy)
Florence or Pisa (for Tuscany)
Rome (for central Italy)
Naples (for the Amalfi Coast)

GETTING AROUND
Once you arrive, transport is something to plan in advance.
Private transfers are the easiest option - This site offers instant quotes online
Trains are reliable between major cities - English train journey mapper tool
Taxis can be limited in smaller towns
Car hire is possible, but not always necessary
For Lake Como and similar destinations, boats are often part of the experience — and sometimes the only way to reach certain venues.

WHERE TO STAY
Accommodation is usually spread across a few options rather than one hotel.
Couples often:
Reserve room blocks
Suggest nearby hotels or villas
Share recommended areas to stay
Book early, especially for summer weddings — the best places go quickly BUT do talk to your couple before booking, as we always recommend that our couples decide one town or city to base their guests (to keep the wedding day logistics smooth) and we provide them with a list of accommodation options to share.

WHAT TO WEAR
Italian weddings are stylish, but not overly formal.
Think 'elegant but comfortable'
Lightweight fabrics work best in warmer months
Heels and cobblestones aren’t always friends - Wedges work really well in Italy
A cardigan or wrap is useful in the evening for early or late in the summer - April, May, October
For multi-day weddings, you may need:
Welcome event outfit
Wedding day outfit
Pool or recovery-day look

WHAT TO EXPECT
Italian weddings are all about the experience.
The day often flows like this:
Ceremony
Aperitivo (drinks and canapés)
Dinner (usually multiple courses)
Cake and dancing
Dinner can be long (in the best way), so settle in and enjoy it.
Food is a big part of the celebration, and all dietary requirements will be catered for — just let the couple know in advance.

GIFTS
Many destination wedding couples prefer:
Contributions to their honeymoon
Online gift lists
Or simply your presence
Travelling with physical gifts isn’t expected. Most weddings do have a card basket - bring a card!

A FEW LOCAL TIPS
Bring comfortable shoes for walking
Stay hydrated in the summer heat
Carry some cash for small purchases
Learn a few basic Italian phrases (always appreciated)
Don't rely on changing money in banks - often you need to be an account holder
Cash machines will only give you €250 at a time BUT if you put the same card in again immediately after, it will give you another €250
